This year’s theme is Cultural Alzheimer’s, a phrase coined by Osi Rhys Osmond in a critical analysis of Welsh culture. This is the subject of the first essay in the book of the same name in which the author asserts: One of the principle causes of our cultural Alzheimer’s is our internal estrangement – we don’t know our own country, our history, or the other language.
Entry is free and all are welcome to join in the celebrations with live music, to look at the artworks and to enjoy a glass of wine and tasty canapés at a very reasonable price.
The raffle prize, drawn on the evening, donated by this year’s sponsors John Edwards and Kamaruddin Mukri, is a unique single copy framed print of a painting by Osi, now on display in Oriel Osi where raffle tickets are for sale at £2 each.

Correspondence by Osi Rhys Osmond
I cherish those unconsidered moments
When we find ourselves unaware
Between things
Times of completion or of waiting
Rising, dressing, gathering, resting
We pause in disregarded places
Posed in unexpected correspondence
Irregular, tangential
Sitting, lying, walking
Strangely unaligned for customary communicate
Then, unconsciously between each other
But as one
We talk, think, dream and stare
The world seems vacated
There is no beginning and no end
Time has vanished
There is only us
And we, are one.

Osi Rhys Osmond’s painting for Maggie’s Cardiff

Osi’s final painting hangs in the new Maggie’s cancer support centre at Velindre hospital, Cardiff which opened earlier this year.
Self Portrait was painted during the last month of Osi’s life while he received treatment for cancer. In this work, Osi focused on the landscapes of his home: his birthplace of Wattsville and his home of 30 years at Llansteffan.
The making of this painting is powerfully and sensitively described in My Brief Eternity : Ar Awyr Le Claire Sturges’ award winning documentary.
