LUMINESCENCE . . . a meditation on peace
An experiential light/art installation by Siân Lewis, guest artist at Oriel Osi
20 December 2024 – 20 March 2025 Winter Solstice (shortest daylight hours in the Northern Hemisphere) to Spring Equinox (equal periods of daylight and darkness)
From the dimming of daylight on the winter solstice, the kinetic artwork became illuminated, producing reflections within the space every evening for 3 months, viewable from the street outside.
It is dedicated to Peace and in homage to Osi, a pacifist who latterly signed his correspondence ‘mewn heddwch / in peace’.
The artwork coincided with a period during which my art studio was next door to Oriel Osi and where I regularly met with a meditation group.
A number of small gatherings were organised in the gallery for interested visitors to experience the work quietly in the space and a further invitation to chant OMs while meditating on peace.
‘This body of light, which takes up the space of a human figure presents as a cosmos of lenses, scintillating and slowly spinning from a cycle wheel, our axis mundi.
We view through our individual lenses, experiencing circulating reflections from interior to exterior, connected by numinous light.
The visitor is invited to experience this gathering of shimmering particles, inspired by meditation and healing…’
Materials: recycled lenses, my old bicycle wheel.

Feedback:
‘I’d like to express huge gratitude and and admiration for your lovely Light/Art installation which has cheered me so much during the dark winter evenings. I love that everything you used was recycled and that it has so much in common with the changing light and beauty of the natural world around us.’ P
‘I was immersed in the interplay between the incredibly transient and impermanent light and the apparent solidity of the lenses and how light played directly on to them and then us. Adding the Om meditation was an utter bonus with us resonating as were the light patterns.’ C
‘For anyone who has difficulty concentrating their mind for a length of time, then your installation is a very effective answer. It is totally mesmerising, suppressing active thought, whilst simultaneously holding one’s attention. A fascinating experience.’ A
